The Occupational English Test (OET) is an international English language proficiency test specifically designed for healthcare professionals who wish to work or study in English-speaking countries. This test is primarily set up for healthcare professionals, including dentists, nurses, doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists, radiographers, occupational therapists, and other allied health professionals. 

The OET focuses on assessing language skills in a healthcare context, ensuring that healthcare practitioners can effectively communicate with patients, colleagues, and the broader healthcare team.

The OET consists of four main language skills :
  • Listening : Candidates listen to healthcare-related audio recordings and answer questions based on what they hear.
  • Reading : Candidates read and comprehend health-related texts before answering questions.
  • Writing : Candidates complete tasks such as writing a discharge letter, or a patient case note all within a healthcare context.
  • Speaking : Candidates participate in role-play scenarios that stimulate real-life healthcare situations, testing their ability to communicate effectively.
SCORING OET is graded on a scale from A (highest) to E (lowest). Candidates are assessed on their ability to understand and use English in a health-care context, and their scores reflect their skills.
